Summary. Book 4 consists of 15 poems, bringing the total of poems in the four volumes to Horace begins the first poem by addressing the year gap in time between publication of Books 1–3 (23 BCE) and Book 4 (13 BCE). The poems address the Muses, the emperor, poetry itself, and other topics, including his love for a boy named Ligurinus. Analysis. Four of the 15 poems celebrate the princeps and his heirs directly (Odes 4, 5, 14, 15), and a fifth, a recusatio, praises Augustus while denying the poet’s ability to laud the emperor in the Pindaric style he deserves. Horace’s final book of odes insured that the memory of Augustus and his stepsons would not lack a sacred poet.
The date of the Odes has caused considerable interest. H. J. Drijvers contends that they are as late as the 3d century. L. Abramowski places them in the latter half of the 2d century. B. McNeil argued that they are contemporaneous with 4 Ezra, the Shepherd of Hermas, Polycarp, and Valentinus (ca. C.E.). Most scholars date them sometime. His four books of odes cover a wide range of moods and topics. Some are public poems, upholding the traditional values of courage, loyalty, and piety; and there are hymns to the gods.
